When we had our polytunnel greenhouse we often used a double tunnel for extra warmth for early spring soil warming and planting. Next winter I want to create some low tunnels inside the unheated greenhouse to have that double cold protection effect. I first read about that in Eliot Colemans fantastic books on winter gardening. The best short statement to describe our approach is the epigraph to this chapter by Buckminster Fuller from his book Shelter ()—“Don’t fight forces; use them.” Instead of bemoaning the forces of winter and trying to fight them head on, we have limited our intervention to the climatic protection provided by two translucent layers.

It's another great day on the slopes. We made snow all night and the conditions are perfect. We will be skiing and riding 9a-9p today. Temps will be in the mid 40's. Make sure you stop by the Blue Ridge Terrace for a warm treat from our friends Blue Ridge Kettle Korn. We will also have Rossignol demo on the Terrace. Test out next seasons gear. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Winter Dreams," we follow the life of Dexter Green. The story is told in three different parts and at three different segments of Dexter's life. When he is 14 the story.

But Hellebores are not the only interesting plant. As Rosemary Veery says in her book, THE GARDEN IN WINTER, some plants such as the Rosa chinensis, Viola, Bergenia, Anemone, and Cyclomen, bloom intermittenly throughout the winter, and there are "characteristic" winter-bloomers such as many types of bulbs, Camellias, Arbutus, and Buddleja/5(7).
